Fljótsdalshérað is a municipality located in the Eastern Region of Iceland. It is the largest municipality in the country by area. The biggest town in the municipality is Egilsstaðir, with a population of 2,300. The Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant is located in the municipality. The large municipality extends from Héraðsflói bay in the northeast to the Vatnajökull glacier in the south west. When main town Egilsstaðir is the elongated lake or river of the same name, Lagarfljót, also called Lögurinn.

The wild reindeer of Iceland are mostly situated in Fljótsdalshérað, where they have a number of between 5,000 an 10,000. The largest forest in Iceland, Hallormsstaðaskógur is also located in Fljótsdalshérað. He emerged from a reforestation attempts from the early 20th century. Reforestation programs can be found in the whole area. The forests and groves are often very well developed hiking trails and their history is marked on maps. The city itself is also interspersed with many trees and other large plants.

By Egilsstaðir runs among others Islands major avenue Hringvegur. The Egilsstaðir Airport is an alternate landing place (besides Akureyri) for Icelands International Airport Keflavík. The large municipality was formed on 1 November 2004 by the merger of three municipalities, two of which were already major towns formed in the 1990s:

  • Municipality Norður-Hérað, formed on September 27, 1997 merger of three rural communities Hlíð (Hlíðarhreppur) Jökuldalur (Jökuldalshreppur) and Tunga (Tunguhreppur)
  • Municipality Austur-Hérað, formed on June 7, 1998 as merger of the town Egilsstaðir (Egilsstaðabær) with the four rural communities Hjaltastaður (Hjaltastaðahreppur) Skriðdalur (Skriðdalshreppur) Vellir (Vallahreppur) and Eiðar (Eiðahreppur)
  • Rural community Fell (Fellahreppur)
