The Joint Security Area (JSA) is the only portion of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face. It is often called the Truce Village of Panmunjom in the media and various military accounts. The JSA is used by the two Koreas for diplomatic engagements and, until March 1991, was also the site of military negotiations between North Korea and the United Nations Command (UNC). Winter Olympics
The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, is a major international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 9 to 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. These will be South Korea’s second Olympic Games and its first Winter Games; Seoul hosted the Summer Games in 1988. Pyeongchang will be the third Asian city to host the Winter Games; the first two were in Japan, at Sapporo (1972) and Nagano (1998).

Pyeongchang (Mountain cluster)
The Alpensia Resort in Daegwallyeong-myeon will be the focus of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Alpensia Sports Park: Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre, Alpensia Biathlon Centre, Alpensia Cross-Country Centre, Alpensia Sliding Centre, Yongpyong Alpine Centre, and the Olympic Village. Stand-alone venues: Bokwang Snow Park and Jeongseon Alpine Centre.

Gangneung (Coastal cluster)
The coastal cluster is located in the city of Gangneung. The Gangneung Olympic Park will include the following four venues: Gangneung Hockey Centre, Gangneung Curling Centre, Gangneung Oval, and the Gangneung Ice Arena. In addition, a stand-alone venue is located on the grounds of Catholic Kwandong University: Kwandong Hockey Centre

Winter Paralympics
The 2018 Winter Paralympics, officially known as the XII Paralympic Winter Games, will be held from 9 to 18 March 2018 and is organized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Competitions in the 2018 Winter Paralympics will be held in six Winter Paralympic sports, with 80 medal events in total. Snowboarding will be expanded into a separate discipline for 2018, with 10 medal events (in 2014, two medal events in snowboarding were held within the alpine skiing programme).

The Lotte World Tower in South Korea

Lotte World Tower is a 123-floor, 555-metre (1,821 ft) supertall skyscraper located in Seoul in South Korea. It opened to the public on April 3, 2017 and is currently the tallest building in the OECD, and is the 5th tallest building in the world. After 13 years of planning and site preparation, the tower gained final approval to start construction by the government in November 2010 and the first groundbreaking activities of piling and frame assembly were observed at the construction site in March 2011. At New Year 2016 the LED-pixels of the facade showed “2016”. On April 2, 2017, Lotte shot off fireworks to celebrate its official opening. The Building is part of Lotte World recreation complex. The opening of the tower took place on April, 3rd 2017, the 50th birthday of Lotte Confectionery Co., Ltd. The company got it’s name after the character Lotte (“Charlotte”) from the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.   read more…

Gangnam District in Seoul

The Gangnam District is one of the 25 local government districts which make up the city of Seoul, South Korea. Gangnam literally means “South of the (Han) River” (Gangnam). Gangnam District had a population of 528,000, making it the 4th most populated district in Seoul. Gangnam District is the third largest district in Seoul, with an area of 39.5 km² (15.3 sq mi). Until the early 1980s Gangnam and its neighboring areas had remained the least developed in Seoul, but a prodigious development over the last 30 years has earned it a reputation of being one of the most affluent, dynamic, and influential areas in both Seoul and South Korea as a whole. In addition, the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Gangnam recently hosted several international conferences such as the 2010 G-20 summit and the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit.   read more…

Songdo International Business District (Songdo IBD) is a new smart city or “ubiquitous city” built from scratch on 600 hectares (1,500 acres) of reclaimed land along Incheon‘s waterfront, 65 kilometres (40 mi) southwest of Seoul, South Korea and connected to Incheon International Airport by a 12.3-kilometre (7.6 mi) reinforced concrete highway bridge, called Incheon Bridge. Along with Yeongjongdo and Cheongna, it is part of the Incheon Free Economic Zone. The Songdo International Business District will feature the Northeast Asia Trade Tower and the Incheon Tower. Schools, hospitals, apartments, office buildings and cultural amenities are to be built in the district. Replicas of architectural hallmarks, including New York City’s Central Park and Venice’s waterways, will also be incorporated. This 10-year development project is estimated to cost in excess of $40 billion, making it one of the most expensive development projects ever undertaken.   read more…

Seoul, officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. A megacity with a population of over 10 million, it is the largest city proper in the OECD developed world. The Seoul National Capital Area is the world’s second largest metropolitan area with over 25 million inhabitants, which includes the surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province. Almost a quarter of South Koreans live in Seoul along with over 275,000 international residents.   read more…
