Sankt Augustin in the Rhineland

🔊 Listen to this Post Sankt Augustin is a town in the Rhein-Sieg district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is named after the patron saint of the Divine Word Missionaries, Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430). The Missionaries established a monastery near the current city centre in 1913. Sankt Augustin is situated about eight km north-east of Bonn and three km south-west of Siegburg.

Its history as a city is recent, it was given that status in 1977 only a few years after Sankt Augustin came into being following the municipal grouping of several villages in the area. The name refers to Augustinus who is the 20th-century patron saint of missionaries in the area.

The city grew rapidly following its formation due to affordable rents, which attracted many government employees from the nearby capital Bonn, and became the second largest city in the area.

Although its predominantly 70s architecture may not be to everyone’s taste, the town is well laid out with wide streets and it has modern facilities. The market square in the centre of town is an integral part of city life and at its heart there is a sculpture representing the city’s eight parts.

There was a shock for Sankt Augustin in 1999 when the federal government relocated to Berlin with the threat of many inhabitants having to follow. Fortunately several institutions allied to the government chose to remain in the town.

Whilst Sankt Augustin has no history as an industrial centre this may be changing with the advent of a new technology park which has attracted a number of innovative companies.
