Newport is a city in
Lincoln County ,
Oregon . It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 10,000, an increase of nearly 13% over its 2000 population. Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County. It is also the home of the
Oregon Coast Aquarium ,
Yaquina Head Lighthouse , and
Rogue Ales .
The Nye Beach historic overlay district is bounded on the north and south sides by Northwest Twelfth Street and Southwest Second Street respectively; on the east side by Herbert Street and on the west side by the Pacific Ocean. Situated on a sea cliff, the district has been a popular vacation spot since the late nineteenth century. Cultural and literary groups such as Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, Yaquina Art Association, and Writers on the Edge are located in Nye Beach, as are Newport’s Performing Arts and Visual Arts Centers. The ocean beach attracts tide pool enthusiasts and beach combers as well as surfers, sail boarders, crabbers, clam diggers, kite flyers, photographers, and artists and has also been the object of marine and geological research projects.

In August 2011, the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration moved its base for research ships from
Seattle to Newport. The base has about 110 marine officers and a total of 175 employees. It bases four ships and provides support for up to two itinerant vessels. NOAA already has some personnel at the
Hatfield Marine Science Center which support the
Alaska Fisheries Science Center and the Northwest Fisheries Science Center . The ships will join the
R/V Oceanus and
R/V Elakha which are based at the center.
