The Mercado da Ribeira is a market hall on Avenida 24 de Julho of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, where fresh fish, vegetables and fruits have been sold since the 19th century. It can be reached by public transport from the Carris via the Cais do Sodré station.

The hall was built from 1876 to plans by the engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia on the northern bak of the Tagus in the immediate vicinity of the Cais do Sodré and opened on 1 January 1882. In the design, Ressano Garcia used elements of iron architecture. A fire on June 7, 1893 destroyed parts of the east side of the market. Under the architect João Piloto the hall was extended in 1902.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the first floor of the building was converted into a cultural center at the instigation of the city administration. Since then, various musical events have taken place there.

In 2014, the west wing of the market hall was completely redesigned and since then operated as a “Time Out Market”. Here, fast food, nouvelle cuisine and traditional Portuguese cuisine with 35 food stalls with wooden benches and tables provide guests with a new urban attraction. The food sellers mainly offer regional products such as sheep’s cheese, ham slices and pudding tartes.
