Massa and Marina di Massa in Tuscany

Massa is a town and comune in Tuscany, central Italy, the administrative centre of the province of Massa and Carrara. It is located in the Frigido River Valley, near the Apuan Alps, some 5 km (3 mi) from the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 114 km west of Florence.

The Massa area is of high touristic value and also hosts a concentration of some 600 industrial and craft activities, located within the so-called Apuan Industrial Zone, with a direct employment of more than 7,000 people. Together with the twin town of Carrara, Massa is known for the extraction and production of marble.

The old town of Massa is located about two and a half kilometers away from the coast. The historic Massa is dominated by the castle in the Upper Town. The 16th Century-scale lower town houses a cathedral, which dates back to a church of 1389. Piazza degli Aranci, dotted with orange trees, is the centre of Massa. On the south side of the square is the Palazzo Cybo-Malaspina, built in baroque style with a red-yellow-white accented facade.

Marina di Massa district has numerous hotels and a sailing club, which organizes regattas, and a marina. For tourists, the amusement park “Luna Park” Marina di Carrara is of interest and of cause the sandy beach. The groynes consisting of blocks of Carrara marble. In the nearby Marina di Carrara the International Marble and Engineering Fair is held on 20,000 square meters of exhibition area every two years.
