The Zoofenster is a
high-rise building in the
Charlottenburg district of
Berlin ‘s
Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough . It owes its name to the
Zoological Garden opposite and, at 118.8 meters, ranks fifth among
Berlin’s high-rises , along with the neighboring Upper West, which is of the same height. Together with the
Upper West , it forms a
gateway to
Kantstraße and frames the
Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at
Breitscheidplatz . The Zoofenster primarily houses a
five-star hotel belonging to the
Waldorf Astoria chain.
The Zoofenster site is bordered by Kantstraße to the south, Joachimsthaler Straße to the west, and Hardenbergstraße to the north. The triangular plot lies slightly diagonally opposite Hardenbergplatz with the Zoologischer Garten train station to the north, and with its somewhat blunted apex opposite Breitscheidplatz with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to the east.

The Zoofenster building was designed by
Frankfurt architect
Christoph Mäckler .
Richard Rogers and the beverage company
Brau und Brunnen originally planned to build a completely glass skyscraper on the same site. Mäckler’s design, however, was intended to better harmonize with the surrounding stone-dominated buildings and blend in more harmoniously in terms of color. Furthermore, the base (the lower six floors) is oriented in height towards the neighboring buildings.
