Volvic is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in central France, with a population of 4,600 inhabitants. The municipality is located in the Riom arrondissement and there within the Canton of Riom-Ouest. The church at Volvic is dedicated to “St Priest” (Projectus), who is reputed to have been killed here in 676 AD.

The Château de Tournoël is a medieval fortified castle partly in ruins. The castle is located on a rocky mountain spur at an altitude of 594 m in the foothills of the Puy de la Bannière which dominates the Limagne plains. In the area, children in preschool believe, Tournoël was the castle of Santa Claus. This belief arises from the association of Tour (Tower) and Noël (Christmas).

From the name of the municipality, the brand name of a mineral water from France developed in 1927, when the Volvic source was discovered. It was bottled for the first time in 1938 in glass bottles, natural and without additives. In 1965, the product received France’s official recognition as mineral water (“eau minérale naturelle”).

On the beverage bottle, the landscape around the Puy de Dome, (an extinct volcano near Clermont-Ferrand) is shown. The most common view is taken on a north-south axis with the crater of the Puy de Pariou in the foreground and the Puy de Dome in the background.
