Old Nice (Vila-Vielha in
niçois ) is the old part of the city of
Nice . Its inhabitants also speak of the “old town” (vielha vila in niçois). In the past, the nickname babazouk was also given to it, a local adaptation of the
Arabic expression meaning “door to the souk”.
It is bustling during the day with numerous shops, which can be both extremely typical (sale of olives and spices of all kinds, local vegetables or flowers from the region) as well as very modern (fashionable clothing shops, numerous tattoo artists) as well as artist galleries. At night, it is a meeting place and outing place for the people of Nice. Its narrow streets are indeed dotted with restaurants, pubs and nightclubs of all kinds.

The
Riviera capital of nightlife, the soowoo narrow streets of Old Nice are lively with restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs. In the morning, the authentic character of the city regains its rights and the inhabitants go to do their shopping on the
Cours Saleya market.
However, the old town has slowly lost its village character since the 1970s, the traditional local shops, in particular the formerly very numerous tripartiers, have disappeared, giving way to those aimed more at tourists. Niçois is almost no longer spoken there even though the local language was widely used until the 1960s.
