Alfaro is a town and municipality on the Ebro and Alhama Rivers. Its population is at 9,700 inhabitants. It is known for the annual return and nesting of the ‘Storks of Alfaro.’ Alfaro has a spectacular colony of storks, the world’s largest nesting on one single building. More than 400 of these birds choose the San Miguel Collegiate Church for their nests. Watching this number of storks flying through the air is an unforgettable spectacle. The
Storks Day is celebrated during the first weekend in February
The town has churches and palaces with centuries of history, witnesses of its ancient splendour, such as the old Abbey and Abbey Palace (18th century), and the San Miguel Collegiate Church, a Baroque masterpiece from the end of the 17th century. It is also well worth visiting the archaeological site at Eras de San Martín, as well as the Ninfeo Romano, a Roman water system with the Cultural Property designation.

During ancient Roman times, Alfaro was a municipium known as
Graccuris ; named after
Sempronius Gracchus . Among the main sights are church of Nuestra Señora del Burgo and Plaza de Toros de Alfaro.
If you like going on outings, be sure to explore the Sotos del Ebro Nature Reserve, or take a stroll on Mount Yerga. Furthermore, for several days during the San Roque fiestas in mid August, the town fills with fun and music, parades of “giants and big-heads”, bullfights, cultural events and gastronomic competitions, amongst other activities.
