Huelva is a city in southwestern Spain, the capital of the province of Huelva. It is located along the Gulf of Cádiz coast, at the confluence of the Odiel and Tinto rivers. The city has been inhabited since 3000 BC; it has a population of 150,000. Huelva is home to Recreativo de Huelva, the oldest football club in Spain.

The Port of Huelva is divided in two sectors: the inner port (in the city) and the outer port (the main one, located in Palos de la Frontera). On August 3, 1492, the Pinta, Niña, and Santa María sailed from Palos de la Frontera. On board were Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón Brothers, who were natives of Palos. Palos is also the site of the Rábida Monastery where Columbus consulted with the Franciscans about his plans for organizing an expedition of discovery. They introduced him to local rich sailors and, eventually, arranged a meeting in Seville with Ferdinand and Isabella. The three ships landed in America on October 12, 1492. The Santa María foundered in American waters, but the other two ships returned to Palos on March 15, 1493.

The most well-known artists in Huelva have been: the poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature Juan Ramón Jiménez, the sculptor Antonio León Ortega, the writer Nicolas Tenorio Cerero and the painter Daniel Vázquez Díaz.

Plaza de las Monjas (Square of the Nuns) was formaly the vegetable garden of the nearby cloister. Later on traditional bullfights were held. Today it’s the central meeting point within the city centre. The tourist information is located here. Plaza de la Palmera (Square of the Palm, even if there has never been a palm tree) is the other central meeting place. It was used as such from the time of the Romans on. Today it’s the meeting spot for young folks. Lots of bars and restaurants can be found in the surrounding.
