Also known as Palazzo Cappello or Palazzo Rizzardi after its previous owners, the building has been officially designated as Juliet’s House since 1940. Along with Juliet’s Tomb, Romeo’s Tomb, and Romeo’s House, it is one of Verona’s Shakespearean sites, associated with the universal and positive ideal of love, and for this reason has become a popular destination for secular pilgrimages. It was a hostel and a warehouse for the city’s German (Tedeschi) merchants and their imports. After being destroyed by fire in 1505, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi was rebuilt in a Renaissance architectural style. It not only endured but also continued to serve its original purpose. It was invented in 1950 by Giuseppe Cipriani founder of Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy, and popularised during the second half of the twentieth century. The beef was served with lemon, olive oil and white truffle or Parmesan cheese.
