South Tyrol (German: Südtirol; Italian: Alto Adige; Ladin: Südtirol), officially the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, is an autonomous province in northern Italy. Together with Trentino, South Tyrol forms the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. The province is the northernmost of Italy, the second largest with an area of 7,400 square kilometres (2,857 sq mi), and has a total population of about 534,000 inhabitants as of 2021. Val Gardena (German: Gröden) is a valley in Northern Italy, in the Dolomites of South Tyrol. It is best known as a touristic skiing, rock climbing, and woodcarving area. The valley’s main river is the Rio Gardena, a tributary of Eisack river. The mountains that surround the valley are formed by dolomite rocks, which confer them a characteristic appearance. Most of the steep slopes are covered by pine woods. The favoured cultivations are barley, rye, potatoes, flax, buckwheat. The three municipalities in Val Gardena are Ortisei, Selva, and Santa Cristina; they were served by the Ferrovia della Val Gardena from 1916 until 1960.   read more…

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last ice age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the southeast), Brescia (southwest), and Trentino (north). Being easily accessible from the north via the Brenner Pass, the lake is a major tourist destination, including a number of exclusive hotels and resorts along its shore.   read more…

According to the 2011 census, the majority of the population speaks German as first language (72.82%).
