Koné is the provincial seat of the North Province. Besides Koné as the largest district are Koniambo and Tiaoué as the smallest settlements of the municipality. Ten different tribes live in the municipality of Koné. Koné is due to the humid west coast of the largest island of New Caledonia Grande Terre and also includes Île Pingiane an off the coast island. Inland, the town is dominated by a mountain range, which rises to 1041 m altitude. The highest point of the municipality is located at 1014 m near the peak of Atheu. Le Mont-Dore is the second largest city of New Caledonia and center of a joint community. It is geographically very vast and mostly lies on the main island Grande Terre, but also other small islands off the coast, such as Ile Ouen, belong to it. To the east of the city, the 772 m high Mont Dore rises, from which one has a wonderful view over the small offshore islands Bailly and Charron. It is situated on a peninsula in the south of New Caledonia’s main island, Grande Terre, and is home to the majority of the island’s European, Polynesian (Wallisians, Futunians, Tahitians), Indonesian, and Vietnamese populations, as well as many Melanesians, Ni-Vanuatu and Kanaks that work in one of the South Pacific‘s most industrialised cities. The city lies on a protected deepwater harbour which serves as the chief port for New Caledonia. The archipelago, part of the Melanesia subregion, includes the main island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, the Chesterfield Islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines, and a few remote islets. The Chesterfield Islands are in the Coral Sea. Locals refer to Grande Terre as Le Caillou (“the pebble”). New Caledonia has a land area of 18,576 km2 (7,172 sq mi).
