Faaborg or Fåborg is an old port town located on Faaborg Fjord in Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality on the island of Funen in Denmark. By road, Faaborg is located 42 kilometres (26 mi) southwest of Odense, 27 kilometres (17 mi) west-northwest of Svendborg, and roughly 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Middelfart, depending upon the route. It has a population of 6,867 (1 January 2024). With its busy port, narrow streets and attractive old houses, the town is popular with tourists, particularly in the summer months. Faaborg was formerly the seat of Faaborg municipality. The seat of the new municipality is Ringe. Both municipalities use(d) Faaborg’s medieval coat of arms.   read more…

Nyborg is a city in central Denmark, located in Nyborg Municipality on the island of Funen and with a population of 17,902 (2024). It is the easternmost settlement on Funen. By road, it is located 34 km east of Odense, 35 km north of Svendborg and 21 km south of Kerteminde. It also connects to Korsør through the Great Belt Bridge. Nyborg is the seat of Nyborg Municipality, and until 1793 it was also the seat of Nyborg County.   read more…

Kerteminde (nickname: Min Amandas by, i.e. My Amanda’s town), is a town in central Denmark, located in Kerteminde Municipality on the island of Funen. The town has a population of 6,044 (1 January 2024). It is a small harbor town surrounded by farms. Kerteminde contains a fish restaurant, Rudolf Mathis, the Viking museum Ladby, and the research and exhibition institution for fish and porpoises Fjord & Bælt.   read more…

Svendborg is a town on the island of Funen in south-central Denmark, and the seat of Svendborg Municipality. With a population of 27,521 (1 January 2024), Svendborg is Funen’s second largest city. In 2000 Svendborg was declared “Town of the year” in Denmark, and in 2003 it celebrated its 750th anniversary as a market town. By road, Svendborg is located 195 kilometres (121 mi) southwest of Copenhagen, 183 kilometres (114 mi) south of Aarhus, 44.2 kilometres (27.5 mi) south of Odense, and 28.5 kilometres (17.7 mi) east of Faaborg.   read more…

Funen with a size of 2,984 km² (1152 sq. miles), is the third-largest island of Denmark following Zealand and Vendsyssel-Thy, and the 163rd largest island of the world. Funen is located in the central part of the country and has a population of 454,358 inhabitants. The main city is Odense, connected to the sea by canal, though this canal is now seldom used. The city’s shipyard Odense Steel Shipyard has been relocated outside of Odense proper. Funen belongs administratively to Region of Southern Denmark. From 1970–2006, the island formed the biggest part of Funen County, which also included the islands of Langeland, Ærø and Tåsinge, as well as a number of smaller islands.   read more…

Egeskov Castle is located in the south of the island of Funen. The castle is Europe’s best preserved Renaissance water castle. Egeskov’s history dates to the 14th century. The castle structure was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554.   read more…
