Judenburg – The Styrian market place for over 900 years

Judenburg is a historic town in the state of Styria in Austria, the capital of the Murtal district. It is located on the western end of the Aichfeld basin at the banks of the Mur river. The municipality also comprises the Katastralgemeinden of Tiefenbach and Waltersdorf. The town was first mentioned in 1074 near Eppenstein Castle, the ancestral seat of the Eppensteiner noble family, who ruled as Styrian margraves in the 11th century. The name literally means “Jews’ Castle”, referring to the town’s origin as a trading outpost on the route across the Alps, in which Jews played an important role, being represented in the city’s coat of arms.   read more…

Graz is the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna and the capital of the federal state of Styria. On 1 April 2010 it had a population of 292,000. Graz has a long tradition as a student city: its six universities have more than 44,000 students. Its “Old Town” is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe. Graz is situated on the Mur River in the southeast of Austria. It is about 200 km (120 mi) southwest of Vienna. The nearest larger urban center is Maribor in Slovenia which is about 50 km (31 mi) away. Styria is a green and heavily forested area.   read more…

Čakovec in Northern Croatia

Čakovec is a city in northern Croatia, located around 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Zagreb, the Croatian capital. Čakovec is both the county seat and the largest city of Međimurje County, the northernmost, smallest and most densely populated Croatian county. Most of the historical buildings in the city of Čakovec are located in its center or nearby park. The city’s historical core has been beautifully preserved and renovated. In the Zrinski castle there is a local museum housing some 17,000 valuable items. Another noteworthy building in the city is a palace built in the Vienna Secession style (Secesijska palača), located at the central square, as well as the Saint Nicholas’ Church (Crkva Svetog Nikole), located in the downtown about 100 meters from the central square. At the central square there is also the Zrinski monument. The Southern Čakovec (Čakovečki jug) is a relatively new neighborhood, with modern houses and buildings including the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua (Crkva Svetog Antuna Padovanskog) and a new elementary school with a sports hall, outdoor basketball and handball grounds and a running track.   read more…

Bruck an der Mur is a city with some 12,500 inhabitants in Styria. It is located at the confluence of the Mur and Mürz Rivers. Its manufactures include metal products and paper; located on the main line between Graz and Vienna, Bruck is an important regional railway hub.   read more…
