The Ribeira (
Portuguese for
river bank ) is the everyday name for the lower part of the historic old town of the
Portuguese city of
Porto , near the
Douro bank. The district is part of the
Freguesia São Nicolau (Porto) and is therefore part of the historic center of the city, which has been a
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
The centre of the Ribeira is the Cais de Ribeira promenade, which connects the entrance to the Dom Luís Bridge with the Praça da Ribeira . Numerous bars, souvenir shops and restaurants are lined up here. From the shore you can see the traditional port wine boats (barcos rabelos ), the Douro and, opposite, the sister city of Vila Nova de Gaia .

The part of the Ribeira behind the waterfront promenade consists of narrow, steep streets and old houses, many of which, although some are now being extensively renovated, are structurally in poor condition and are often empty – except for the shops on the ground floor.
