This is because the origin history and historical and urban development of the “Venice of the North”. Sankt Petersburg has a little more than 300 years of history full of ups and downs. Visitors who are strolling around the streets soon have the feeling to visit one of the great European cities of the 19 century rather than a Russian city. The city at the river Neva has, compared to other capitols in the world, the most extensive historic downtown and can be described without exaggeration as an open-air museum of architecture.
The classic entertainment culture which Petersburg has to offer is also on the European top level niveau. World famous are the Hermitage and the Russian Museum. Opera and ballet at its best is shown in the Mariinsky Theater. Always worth a visit are the former imperial suburban residences in Peterhof, Pushkin, Pavlovsk, Gatchina and Orange Tree.
The northerns metropolis of the world experienced in recent years an enormous economic boom. This becomes particularly clear due to the construction of prestigious shopping and business centers. Since Vladimir Putin, born in Sankt Petersburg, have had the saying in the Kremlin Petersburg’s position in Russia has grown strong again. One expression of this new role is certainly the move of the Russian Constitutional Court from Moscow to the Neva. Petersburg continue to remain the “second capital” of Russia.
