A Judería—or Jewish quarter—is the area within a
Spanish city where Jews were legally required to reside. In a broader sense, the term is used to designate a district in which the majority—or all—of the inhabitants were of the
Jewish faith .
Under Alfonso X in the 13th century, the legal code Las Siete Partidas entered into force; within its fourth section (Partida Cuarta)—which comprised 256 laws—was enshrined, among other provisions, a collection of legal statutes containing regulations specifically governing the Jewish population.

Beginning in the 13th century, various Spanish monarchs enacted laws and decrees regulating the lives of Jews. These laws could include regulations concerning the type of dwellings permitted, the maximum number of Jews allowed in a city, and even their access to specific professions. Further royal decrees issued by Spanish monarchs in subsequent centuries exerted a profound influence on the living conditions of Jews in Spain. One such example is a decree—the
Leyes de Ayllón —issued in 1412, which mandated the rigorous ghettoization of Jews; while this permitted Jews to settle in specific areas, it simultaneously imposed significant restrictions upon them.
During the
Spanish Inquisition at the end of the 15th century—particularly after 1492 (the
Alhambra Decree )—Jews were forced to convert or face expulsion, a development that profoundly impacted the legal framework governing the Juderías.
