Jerusalem Day (Hebrew: Yom Yerushalayim) is an Israeli holiday. It occurs on the 28th of Iyar according to the Jewish calendar.

On this day, the Jewish population of Israel, primarily those living in Jerusalem itself, celebrates the “reunification” of West and East Jerusalem. During the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel captured East Jerusalem. The Israeli victory united the two previously separate parts of Jerusalem under Israeli control, and the Israeli flag was raised on the Temple Mount.

For the Arab population of Jerusalem, Jerusalem Day represents a provocation.

Journalist Bradley Burston describes the march through the Israeli-occupied and later annexed Old City of Jerusalem in an article in Haaretz as an

“annual, gender-segregated, far-right, religious carnival of hate, celebrating the anniversary of Israel’s conquest of Jerusalem by humiliating the city’s Palestinian Muslims. Participants vandalized shops in Jerusalem’s Muslim Quarter, chanting “Death to Arabs” and “The (Jewish) Temple will be built, the (Al-Aqsa) Mosque will be burned,” smashing windows and door locks, and pouring glue into the locks of shops, which were forced to close for fear of further damage.”

Contrary to the claims of the historical revisionist Netanyahu government and other ultranationalists, Tel Aviv is in fact still the sole, internationally recognized capital of Israel. There is also no such thing as a “united Jerusalem.” The corresponding Jerusalem Law has been declared null and void several times by the UN. As the seat of the Israeli government, West Jerusalem is considered “tolerated.”
