The Hotel Waldhaus is a historic hotel in
Sils-Maria in the
Upper Engadine region of
Grisons ,
Switzerland . It is one of the few five-star hotels in Switzerland that has been owned by the same family since its opening.
The Hotel Waldhaus in Sils-Maria opened in 1908. It was commissioned by hotelier Josef Giger-Nigg and designed by the young architect Karl Koller , who had just established himself as a hotel architect in the Engadine region. Both its exterior and interior design reflect the evolution from the exuberant style of the Belle Époque to the simpler aesthetics of the early 20th century.
The historic “Waldhaus” hotel is largely preserved in its original condition, both inside and out, including the furnishings. The
Welte-Mignon piano, a mechanical piano purchased in 1910 from the company
M. Welte & Sons in
Freiburg im Breisgau for 2100 Reichsmarks and played with
music rolls , still stands in the hotel’s music salon. The Hotel Waldhaus also houses paintings by
Clara Porges , as well as works by
Gottardo Segantini and the photographer
Albert Steiner .
Guests included
Theodor W. Adorno ,
Thomas Bernhard ,
Joseph Beuys ,
Marion Countess Dönhoff ,
Friedrich Dürrenmatt ,
Thomas Mann ,
Hermann Hesse ,
Fritz Stern , and
Luchino Visconti , as well as
Gerhard Richter and
Jonathan Meese .
Emil Rathenau ,
Samuel Fischer (publisher) ,
Max Reinhardt ,
Albert Einstein ,
Otto Klemperer , and
Max Liebermann , all with Jewish family backgrounds, were also regular guests at the Waldhotel.
