Gifhorn is a town and capital of the district Gifhorn, in Lower Saxony. It is situated at the confluence of the River Ise and River Aller, near the cities of Hanover, Celle, and Wolfsburg. Gifhorn is home to the International Wind- and Watermill Museum which contains a comprehensive collection and working replicas of the world’s most common windmills.

Gifhorn was first mentioned in 1196, when it was located at the crossing of two important merchant routes, one transporting salt between Lüneburg and Brunswick, the other transporting grain between Celle and Magdeburg.

The city is home to several architecturally interesting buildings from different eras. The nature reserves and lakes around the city – like the Lüneburger Heide – has made Gifhorn a popular recreation area for day trippers from Braunschweig and Hannover.
