The fish market in the
Old Port of
Marseille is a small
fish market made up of around ten stands located in the middle of the
Quai de la Fraternité , at the exit of the “Vieux-Port” stop of the
M1 metro line . Since
Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture , the fish market is partially covered by the
Ombrière du Vieux-Port de Marseille , an immense mirror ceiling reflecting the activity of the quay.
Installed from 1909 to 1976 on the Rive Neuve quay in a market hall , today transformed into a national theater called La Criée – Théâtre national de Marseille , the Marseille fish market has since been moved to the port of Saumaty , near L’Estaque . Only this small fish market still remains from the intense Marseille fish farming activity of yesteryear.
