The fish market in the Old Port of Marseille is a small fish market made up of around ten stands located in the middle of the Quai de la Fraternité, at the exit of the “Vieux-Port” stop of the M1 metro line. Since Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture, the fish market is partially covered by the Ombrière du Vieux-Port de Marseille, an immense mirror ceiling reflecting the activity of the quay.

Installed from 1909 to 1976 on the Rive Neuve quay in a market hall, today transformed into a national theater called La Criée – Théâtre national de Marseille, the Marseille fish market has since been moved to the port of Saumaty, near L’Estaque. Only this small fish market still remains from the intense Marseille fish farming activity of yesteryear.

Every day, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the middle of the Quai de la Fraternité, at the exit of the “Vieux-Port” stop of the M1 metro line, around ten artisanal fishermen unload their fish on the quay fished during the night around the old port, the Frioul islands and the Massif des Calanques with their Marseille boats.

The fish are sold at auction to all comers, in a typical Marseille atmosphere, with depending on arrivals: scorpionfish, red mullet, greater weever, whiting, red gurnard, forkbeard, sardines, anchovies, cod, sea bream, bass, mackerel, mullet, ballan wrasse, sole, Peter’s fish, common pandora, monkfish, turbot, sea bream, conger eel, grouper, moray eel, eel, tuna, octopus, slipper lobster, spiny lobsters, lobster, prawns, sea urchin and more. Some restaurants in the old port and the seaside offer them on their Marseille cuisine menu, grilled in olive oil, or in sardinade, anchoïade, Aïoli garni, fish soup or bouillabaisse.
