Fika is a social institution in
Sweden . It means taking a break from an activity to have coffee or, more rarely, another drink with family, friends or colleagues.
A fika can last between 15 and 45 minutes. Coffee is often accompanied by a sweet treat called fikabröd , usually a sweet pastry or cake. This tradition of a long coffee break with a small snack is a central part of Swedish culture, as Swedes are among the largest coffee consumers in the world.

Fika can also include sandwiches or other non-sweet foods. Fika can take place in a café or patisserie, at work as a break from work, at home or outdoors. As a specific form of the word
fika ,
fikat can also be used instead of
fikan . However, this is only relevant when referring to the actual break rather than the meal.
Additionally, there is the use of the word
fika to mean coffee as such, as in the expression
en kopp fika as “a cup of coffee”.
