The Oberpollinger is a known department store in Neuhauser Strasse in Munich. It is run by the The KaDeWe Group GmbH and is the largest by area department store in southern Germany. The building was built in 1905 by Max Littmann in the style of historicism, in the form of Neo-Renaissance and is a listed building.

On the initiative of the city council advisory “Munich Artist Commission” architect Max Littmann had to work several times on the design so as not to dominate the Neuhauser Strasse, with its small-scale buildings and the adjacent Citizen’s Hall, to much. Finally they agreed on a divided facade, disguised with natural stone. After about ten months of construction, the new department store was opened in 1905. On two of the three gables weathervanes in the form of merchant ships are standing, as a reference to the origin of the Hamburg department store operator.

Max Littmann designed the store in accordance with the most modern facilities of its time. The steel frame consisted of beams, which were geared to a structural grid. For fire protection they were covered with concrete. The facades are clad in limestone. Including the ground floor, the department store had sales areas on four floors, with another floor for the administration on top and a cellar with the staff dressing rooms, storage and loading areas.

Today, you find quality household goods, a toy department, a large perfumery and cosmetic area, luggage, watches & jewelery, stationery, clothing, high-priced accessories and on the 5th floor next to the restaurant with a rooftop terrace, a confectionery department with fine confisery at the Oberpollinger. Over the past few years after the renovation and the building of the additional building, the trading-up is nearly completed at a premium level. On the ground floor of the house there are now, among other brands, the companies Gucci, Christian Dior, Burberry, Tod’s, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Prada and Miu Miu.
