The 100 Castles Route is a cycling route in Münsterland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The approximately 960 km long route winds its way largely away from main roads, following flat cycle paths from castles to moated castles, stately homes and farmsteads, castle parks and cottage gardens, monasteries and churches. In total, around 100 buildings are located along or near the route.   read more…

Babylon in Berlin

The Kino Babylon is a cinema in the Mitte neighbourhood of Berlin and part of a listed building complex at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz opposite the Volksbühne theatre. The building was erected 1928–29. It was designed by the architect Hans Poelzig in the Neue Sachlichkeit style. In 1948 the theatre was heavily renovated and served afterward as a speciality cinema for the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). After the auditorium was closed due to risk of collapse, it was restored between 1999 and 2001 in accordance with conservation guidelines. In 2002 the restoration was awarded the “German Award for Monument Protection”.   read more…

Kapsalon is a fast food dish created in 2003 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It consists of a layer of french fries placed into a disposable metal take-away tray, topped with döner meat, covered with slices of Gouda cheese, and heated in an oven until the cheese melts. Then a layer of shredded iceberg lettuce is added, dressed with garlic sauce and sambal, a hot sauce.> The term kapsalon is Dutch for “hairdressing salon” or barber shop, alluding to the inventor’s place of work. The dish is a product of Dutch multiculturalism, combining elements of dishes from multiple cultures. The dish has spread internationally in a relatively short time.   read more…

Listowel (Irish: Lios Tuathail, meaning ‘Tuathal’s ringfort‘) is a heritage market town in County Kerry, Ireland. It is on the River Feale, 28 km (17 mi) from the county town, Tralee. The town of Listowel had a population of 4,794 according to the 2022 census, the third largest in the county. Listowel is also the name of a townland within the town and an encompassing civil parish. Described by the organisers of Listowel’s writers festival as the “Literary Capital of Ireland”, a number of internationally known playwrights and authors have lived there, including Bryan MacMahon and John B. Kenmare (Irish: Neidín, meaning ‘the little nest’) is a small town in the south of County Kerry, Ireland. The name Kenmare is the anglicised form of Ceann Mara, meaning “head of the sea”, referring to the head of Kenmare Bay. It is also a townland and civil parish. Cahersiveen (Irish: Cathair Saidhbhín, meaning ‘Little Sadhbh‘s stone ringfort‘), sometimes Cahirciveen, is a town in the south-west of Ireland, in County Kerry. As of the 2022 census, it had a population of 1,297. Cahersiveen was designated as a “Gaeltacht Service Town” in June 2023, when the then Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan launched the “Cathair Saidhbhín Language Plan” alongside Kerry County Council.   read more…
