The Peninsula Paris is a historic luxury hotel and also part of the Palaces de France originally known as the Hotel Majestic, located on Avenue Kléber in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, France. It opened in 1908 as the Hotel Majestic and was converted to government offices in 1936. The hotel served as a field hospital for wounded officers during World War I, staffed largely by British aristocrats. During World War II, it served as the headquarters of the German military high command in France during the German occupation of Paris. The building played a pivotal role in the deportation of Parisian Jews and the 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler. The building reopened as The Peninsula Paris in August 2014, following a complicated and costly restoration.   read more…

Deutschlandhaus in Berlin

The Deutschlandhaus, located in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, is a heritage-listed building situated at the corner of Stresemannstraße 90 and Anhalter Straße 20, adjacent to Askanischer Platz. This flat-roofed structure, comprising four upper floors, forms part of the Europahaus complex—a building ensemble constructed in the New Objectivity style along the former Königgrätzer Straße starting in 1926 and completed in 1931. Today, the name Europahaus applies exclusively to the eleven-story northern section of the complex, located at Stresemannstraße 92–94. The building was converted by the Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation into a documentation center dedicated to the themes of flight and expulsion, which opened on June 21, 2021.   read more…

Coq au vin (“rooster/cock with wine”) is a French dish of chicken braised with wine, lardons, mushrooms, and optionally garlic. A red Burgundy wine is typically used, though many regions of France make variants using local wines, such as coq au vin jaune (Jura), coq au riesling (Alsace), coq au pourpre or coq au violet (Beaujolais nouveau), and coq au Champagne.   read more…

Midleton (Irish: Mainistir na Corann, meaning “monastery at the weir”) is a town in south-eastern County Cork, Ireland. It lies approximately 16 km east of Cork City on the Owenacurra River and the N25 road, which connects Cork to the port of Rosslare. A satellite town of Cork City, Midleton is part of Metropolitan Cork. It is the central hub of business for the East Cork Area. The town is in the civil parish of Middleton. The State Opera (Czech: Státní opera) is an opera house in Prague, Czech Republic. It is part of the National Theatre of the Czech Republic, founded by Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in 1992. The theatre itself originally opened in 1888 as the New German Theatre and from 1949 to 1989 it was known as the Smetana Theatre. More recently it was renamed the Prague State Opera. Dungarvan (Irish: Dún Garbhán, meaning ‘Garbhann’s fort’) is a coastal town and harbour in County Waterford, on the south-east coast of Ireland. Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan was the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford. Waterford City and County Council retains administrative offices in the town. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name.   read more…

The Synagogue on Reichenbachstraße is a synagogue in Munich. The building is located in the Isarvorstadt close to the Gärtnerplatz. It was Munich’s main synagogue from 1947 until 2007 when the Ohel Jakob synagogue was opened. It was reopened in 2025 after being restored from the arson attack in 1970.   read more…

Clonmel (Irish: Cluain Meala, meaning ‘honey meadow’) is the county town and largest settlement of County Tipperary, Ireland. The town is noted in Irish history for its resistance to the Cromwellian army which sacked the towns of Drogheda and Wexford. With the exception of the townland of Suir Island, most of the borough is situated in the civil parish of “St Mary’s” which is part of the ancient barony of Iffa and Offa East.   read more…
