The Elbvororte (Elbe suburbs) are located in the West of Hamburg with an increased density of wealthy inhabitants. The greatest and most of impressive collection of villa’s from 18th and 19th centuries are located here, as well as the headquarters of the oldest and most prestigious companies in the city. Like nowhere else in the city here you can experience and observe the typical Hamburg life philosophy. Besides the quarters described below there are Sülldorf, Klein Flottbek (home of the Derby Park hosting the Riders Tour and other international derby events), Groß Flottbek and Osdorf.
Blankenese
Today it’s home to 13,000 inhabitants. Blankenese has a long history as a fishing village along the Elbe River. Until 1927 Blankenese was an independent town in Holstein and then it was merged into the town Altona by law. In 1938 Altona was merged into Hamburg with the Greater Hamburg Act. The stunning views from the river-facing portions of Blankenese have resulted in highly desirable properties and expensive real estate prices. The steep hillside residences boast many tiny, pedestrian-only streets and 4,864 stairs. The Strandweg is home to the Strand Hotel, built in 1902, as well as several other cafes and restaurants. There are two lighthouses, a roman garden, a doll museum and many parks and walking trails in Blankenese.
Nienstedten
Nienstedten is home to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. The population is around 6,800. The public park Hirschpark is located at the river Elbe, which contains Tennis facilities and a small Wildlife reservoir. A part of the Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr is located in the barracks Clausewitz-Kaserne. The academy of the Bundeswehr educates officers for leading positions.
Othmarschen
The first records on Othmarschen are from 1317. Together with Altona, Othmarschen became a part of Hamburg in 1937/1938 through the Greater Hamburg Act. The private International School of Hamburg (ISH) is located here. The Ernst Barlach Haus is a museum for the work of the expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer Ernst Barlach. It is located in the Jenisch Park. The museums harbour in the neighbourhood Övelgönne is a small port with some old ships. The Jenisch Park, Hindenburgpark and the Schröders Elbpark directing directly to the beach of the river Elbe.
Rissen
The population is about 14,000 inhabitants. From south to the north, Rissen is about three times as long as from the west to the east. In the north of Rissen, a large forested area, the so-called Klövensteen is positioned which is commonly a popular place for recreational activities like walking, jogging, riding, etc. Rissen is home to Hamburger Golf-Club (HGC) Falkenstein. HGC is a private club originally founded in 1906. The current clubhouse was constructed in 1930-1931. It is a par 71, championship course at 5,387 meters. In 2006 HGC/Falkenstein made the list of top 100 golf courses in the world.
