Hamelin (German: Hameln) is a town on the river Weser in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the capital of the district of Hamelin-Pyrmont and has a population of 59,000. Hamelin is also the gateway to the surrounding Weserbergland mountains, which can be visited by hikers and bikers.

Embedded into the gentle hills of the Weser Mountains Region lies, to the left and the right of the river Weser, the town of Hamelin. Amongst Cinderella and the Lying Baron of Münchhausen this is the home of the darkest fellow from the German Fairy-tale Route – the Pied Piper. More than a million day tourists are drawn to Hamelin each year.

The town is famous for the folk tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin (German: Der Rattenfänger von Hameln), a medieval story that tells of a tragedy that befell the town in the thirteenth century. The version written by the Brothers Grimm made it popular throughout the world; it is also the subject of well-known poems by Goethe and Robert Browning. Although Hamelin has a fine medieval old town with some remarkable buildings, the main attraction is the tale of the Pied Piper. In the summer every Sunday, the tale is performed by actors in the town centre.

Within the beautiful Weser Mountains Region Hamelin is starting point for many delightful strolls, walk- and bike tours or trips by riverboat. Numerous leisure time activities for water enthusiastic, culturally interested or sport loving people are enriching a stay in Hamelin.
