HERRENCHIEMSEE

The island Herreninsel, with an area of 238 hectares, is the biggest of the three main islands of the Chiemsee, a lake in Upper Bavaria. Together with the islands of Fraueninsel and Krautinsel it forms the municipality of Chiemsee.

Herrenchiemsee is inhabited by only about 300 people. The island is famous for the palace of Herrenchiemsee built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. Apart from the palace the island also consists of the Old Palace Herrenchiemsee, a former Augustinian monastery (Monastery Herrenchiemsee).

FRAUENCHIEMSEE

The 15.5-hectare (38-acre) large and car free Fraueninsel houses 300 permanent residents as well as an active Benedictine convent. The monastery was founded in 782. Frauenchiemsee along with its sister island Herreninsel is one of the main tourist attractions on the Chiemsee, and is famous for the Kloster Liquor spirit, which is produced by the nuns. The school on the island was named Irmengard Gymnasium, after Irmgard of Chiemsee.

The island is accessible by ship year round. There are also several boats that can take passengers from Frauenchiemsee to Herreninsel and back.
